      After the debate, we must let the media know who we thought won. We should bombard major networks with our opinions; statments like, "In the debates, I felt I really got to know John Kerry, and I now trust him" or, "the president seemed confused" would be appropriate and effective. In this thread please discuss what type of message we want to send to the media, and how best to send it.

  I think the "fantasy world of spin"/"what war is the president talking about?" line is the best.  Why? Because it also implies that the post mea culpa press core is still living in fantasy land.

  We need to basically trick them into questioning the president by wondering about the validity of their own agreed upon talking points.  Ergo:

  Tonight the president seemed to indulge himself in the same confused fantasies about the War on Terror that led the country down the wrong path with no one asking the hard questions.  We will lose this fight if we dont, as Dr. Phil says, get real. (aside: they all love Dr. Phil for some reason) John Kerry made a precise, honest case for his presidency tonight and I felt jarred awake by the passion and force of his insights.  I hope the media can step outside of Dreamland for long enough to appreciate the grave reality of our current situation.  Extremism does not slumber while we snore away the lessons of the last few years--can we afford another four years with a president asleep at the wheel.

  •  Goring Bush

    The "fantasy world" theme lends itself, rather ironically, to an easy strategy for post-debate spin:  we can "Gore" Bush by looking for any mistake, any spun claim and holding it up as an example of how Bush is living in a fantasy world.

    IMHO, that's actually much more effective than the "flip-flop" thing.  "Flip-flops" are largely a matter of opinion, and depends, at least in part, on how simply Kerry puts his answers.  The "fantasy world of spin" theme means Bush has to stick to factual accuracy(!)  That's much harder to do.

      by Bush's 'rose-colored glasses.' Really shocked. He seems utterly unaware of the realistic facts on the ground. He's all 'pie-in-the-sky' with his rosy plans. But I think we need realistic, down to earth, pragmatism.

•  Suggestions for things to look for

  The "post-debate spin" that the RNC's warroom will look to make happen will doubtlessly focus around alleged "flip-flops" in Kerry's debate statemtents.  They will try to dig up prior statements and claim the debate statements are at odds with them.

  In some ways, this is a tougher sell than the simple "exaggerator" theme they had going against Gore.  That theme consisted of a simple meticulous fact-check; any mistake was counted as an "exaggeration".  Kerry flip-flops will be a tougher sell.

  What we can do:
  I believe we can do two things.  First, look for ways in which Kerry's statements are consistent (and get started on that now; the Iraq war will be a biggie, as will, quite likely, the first Gulf War, weapons systems, etc.).  And second, we can "Gore" Bush by treating any misstatement as an example of his "fantasy world" affliction.
